Why declutter before moving
Packers charge by volume and time. That old cooler, the extra mattress frame and the boxes of magazines all cost money to wrap, load and unload — only for you to throw them away at the new place.
Get the timing right
Clear unwanted items two or three days before packing day. The packers get an emptier home to work in, and you are not juggling a kabadiwala and a packing crew at the same time.
Room by room
Kitchen: old utensils, a spare gas stove, the microwave you replaced. Bedrooms: extra beds, broken chairs, old mattresses frames. Living room: the old TV, the sofa you are not taking. Store room and loft: everything. Balcony: coolers, plastic chairs, flower-pot stands.
The "not sure" corner
Put anything you are undecided about in one corner. When the buyer visits, you get a figure for each piece and decide on the spot.
Moving out of a rented flat
Leave the flat empty and swept, as agreed in your lease. A clearance the day before hand-over makes the deposit inspection simpler.
