Key points
- Insist on a scale you can read.

1. The hand-held balance
A spring balance held up by the buyer is the easiest to misread. Ask for a flat scale on the floor that you can read yourself.
2. A scale that does not start at zero
Before the first item goes on, check the reading is zero. A pre-loaded scale or a foot resting on the platform changes every reading.
3. Mixing grades
Copper or brass thrown in with iron, or cardboard mixed into newspaper, gets weighed at the lower rate. Ask for each material to be weighed separately.
4. Mystery deductions
A few kilos "for the sack" or "for moisture" may be fair occasionally, but it should be explained and agreed before weighing — not quietly subtracted from the total.
5. Losing count of bundles
With many bundles, note each weight as it is called out. Add them up yourself before agreeing the total.
6. Rate after weight
Ask the rate for each material before weighing begins. A rate announced only after the total is known is a rate you cannot compare.
